My friendship began with Mary from Holton House. We went out for coffee, a bite to eat and a stroll through the mall every Thurs night for a couple of hours. Mary opened my eyes to the wonderful world of ‘shopping’ and has become a treasured friend. Her enthusiasm for the simple pleasures in life have helped to ground and centre me, and to slow me down, although she actually has more energy than I do! Following her example, I am now more able to stay in the moment and to appreciate a bit of fun, conversation and her excitement over finding the perfect pair of earrings!

At L’Arche Hamilton we are excited to welcome volunteers to join us in our mission to make known the gifts of those with disabilities through mutually transforming relationships.  Many volunteers join L’Arche with a willingness to help...and find they are experiencing rewards far beyond their expectations.

We have a wide variety of opportunities for people to volunteer with us, usually right alongside Core Members (adults with developmental disabilities) in our community. Some volunteers will meet frequently with an individual to work on empowering activities and life-skills, others will come to the home to cook a meal for the house with support from the Core Members, still others will go to our day program to perform music or create pottery and other crafts with Core Members.  More of a home repair kind of person? We are in frequent need of someone to paint a room, or fix a leaky tap or a wobbly chair. Enjoy gardening? Come help with  our vegetable gardens.  Don't mind the cold? We always need help shoveling snow. No matter your giftedness, we need you.

We have also initiated a local Community CoffeeHouse at the Bernie Morelli Centre, operated by volunteers.
