| Typical day of an Assistant
|
| |
|
What occurs on a typical day is varied, multi-faceted and depends on which house one is in and what day it is. The following is an outline of what the day may look like. The daily schedule and responsibilities differ depending on the week and the house.
Mornings
Morning is a busy time in a L'Arche home as everyone gets up and ready for their day. As is typical in most homes, people have showers, breakfest and then head off to work. All of the Core Memers in L'Arche HAmilton have some sort of day time activity that they participate in whether it is at a job site, workshop or a recreation program. Once the Core Members have gone off to work, the Assistants attend to various chores like meetings, appointments or household responsibilities.
Personal Time
If the needs of the house are met, there is usually two to three hours of personal time in the afternoons. At this point, Assistants are free to rest, exercise or do personal errands. It is encouraged that Assistants use this time to reenergize themselves and to ensure they stay "well" within the community.
Afternoons
The Core Members are welcomed when they return home. They may need accompaniment to do banking, shopping, or to go to appointments. After a long day, they may just want to relax and watch TV or sit on the porch. Core Members are encouraged to help with preparing dinner or setting the table.
Evenings
At dinner everyone sits down and shares a meal together. This is an important time in the day as everyone comes together to share news, chat, celebrate and simply be with one another. We all help with the clean up, preparing lunches for the next day, and then we all gather in the living room for prayer. Often a candle is lit, and a reading is chosen. Thoughts and reflections around the reading are shared. There is time for each one to express their prayers silently, aloud or in sign language. This is an important and valuable part of the day.
After prayer, there is time for outings or leisure activities. Some people may go visit another house, some may go swimming, or some may go to visit family or a friend. Others may simply relax in front of the television.
Community Nights/Common Worship
Every week the entire community gathers for an evenng. Most weeks this is on a Monday evening for Common Worship. We simply gather in the basement of one of our homes and have a time of music, silence, reflection and prayer. It is a beautiful way to be together and share community. On the last Wednesday of the month, we gather at our office building, the Gathering Space, for a Community Night. We come together for a pot-luck meal, to celebrate birthdays and to process community information. Mainly, it is a time of socializing and being together. Our many friends and volunteers know they are always invited to share in these times together.
Weekends
On weekends, the schedule is more relaxed. People typically sleep in and enjoy a slower tme together. There are chores around the house that need to be done, but there is also an atmosphere of leisure as a weekend typically brings. On Sunday mornings, we worship at our various churches and then head off to whatever else the weekend brings.
