What is L'Arche?
L'Arche is an international family of communities for people who have a learning disability and those wishing to share life with them. In 1964, Canadian Jean Vanier founded the first L'Arche home in Trosly, France. Today there are 124 communities of L'Arche in the world, spread out over the five continents and in 30 different countries. L'Arche welcomes nearly 2700 people with learning disabilities.

What is L'Arche Hamilton?
L'Arche Hamilton was founded in 1978 and has grown to include four houses and one apartment close to downtown Hamilton.

How many people are in the community?
About 33 people live in the houses. Many others who do not live in the houses also belong to the community, bringing the total to approximately 45.

How old are Assistants at L'Arche Hamilton?
Assistants have been as young as 18 and as mature as 60. The median age tends to be approximately 28 or 29.

Where do Assistants at L'Arche Hamilton come from?
Many different places. L'Arche Hamilton has welcomed Assistants from every corner of the world including Canada, the United States, England, Ireland, Germany, France, Hungary, Sierra Leon, Philippines, Israel, etc...

Is L'Arche affiliated with any particular religious denomination?
L'Arche Hamilton is an ecumenical, Christian community that welcomes peoples from a variety of religious denominations and beliefs. L'Arche, while founded in a Roman Catholic tradition in France, has felt an ecumenical pull almost since its inception. L'Arche Hamilton finds ways to pray and celebrate that are respectful and inclusive to all.
